Five good things that happened in trucking this week – Aug. 7

Article written by Catharine Conway
Trucking continues to find the good in the world as well as its community.
With the first full week of August – almost – behind us, it’s been nothing short of eventful with Hurricane Isaias hitting our shores and tornados in the Northeast leading to widespread flooding and power outages across the East Coast. As the industry that never stops moving, trucking continues to move forward, no matter what challenges it may face.

Werner Enterprises helps kids get back to school

Back-to-school time for families is always full of shopping trips for kids to pick out the latest lunch box design, pick out their favorite pens and choose a backpack that fits their personality. With the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, back-to-school shopping has changed. It’s recommended that only one member of a family go shopping as to limit the amount of exposure to the disease.
Werner Enterprises’ Blue Brigade is a team of compassionate and committed associates who volunteer their time and talent to serve the community. This week, this team has banded together and brought back-to-school shopping to the families themselves.
Last Friday, they packed up school supplied to be distributed by Operation Homefront to military families in Omaha, Neb.
This past Tuesday, the volunteer group helped with Autism Action Partnership, making activity kits for families to use at home.

Schneider celebrates 85 years

Schneider National, a provider of truckload, intermodal and logistics services, celebrated 85 years this week with some nostalgic memorabilia throughout the years.
In 1935, Al Schneider took a leap of faith when he sold the family car to buy the company’s first truck. That investment is still paying dividends. Al, and his son Don after him, foresaw the growth of Schneider’s roadway system and the need for shipping companies and truckload services to get goods where they needed to be. Al and Don Schneider built the company on a firm foundation of safety, integrity, respect and excellence — and they built it to last.
Schneider has continued those values, keeping its focus on safety and its social responsibility to the environment and the community. The company began to focus on fuel efficiency, freight consolidation and energy conservation in the 1970s, and operating sustainably has allowed Schneider to do more with less and reduce emissions.

Preparing herself for all of their stories when they return, Starr commented that the boys’ main focus is “all the catfish and good food their gonna eat!”
